Dallas Mercer Consulting

After becoming an employer advisor in the field of workers compensation, Dallas Mercer quickly learned that the majority of people she was talking to didn’t really understand the workers compensation process. Realizing there was a real opportunity to educate employers was the driving force behind her starting Dallas Mercer Consulting (DMC), which specializes in workplace injury, non-occupational leave management, occupational health & safety consulting and training, as well as industrial hygiene services. Since forming two decades ago, this Mount Pearl-based business now services over 500 clients across Canada, ranging from small companies to Crown Corporations, all who are facing similar challenges.

DMC formed in 2002 after Dallas moved back to Newfoundland and Labrador to provide this much needed service to Atlantic Canadian employers. As it became apparent that she needed to make connections within her community and throughout other provinces, Dallas became a member of her local chamber of commerce. From there, it became so much more than a membership. She started attending events and hosting chamber workshops, while the business was also profiled in the chamber magazine, which helped build its profile. “They were my starting point and gave me a forum," she said.

When looking to expand into different provinces, Dallas’s first step was to become a member at chambers servicing the areas in which she wanted to grow her business. She is proud to be a member of the Mount Pearl, Fredericton, Halifax and Charlottetown chambers.

“Local chambers will connect you with other chambers," Mercer explained. “It is a ready-made network that you can access and jump into to start making those connections.”

Being a chamber member has allowed Dallas to grow her business in ways she never imagined. They provided a platform for connecting and networking, which has allowed DMC to grow into new markets and reach other businesses through the chamber. While folks might wonder about how and when to get involved with an organization like the chamber, Mercer explains that it’s best to just jump in.

“First thing is to join the chamber and attend events to get to know people,” she said.

The chamber also does a lot for employee advocacy, and in doing so, they contact Dallas to assist other businesses in providing workers compensation education.

“It is a wonderful community and a great opportunity to connect with others,” she said. “Other business owners get it. It’s a place to have conversations and a critical part of the business community.”
